I am new here and was hoping someone might have come across the names Foscaldi or Serra from Cassano allo Ionio. My great grandfather was Vincenzo Foscaldi of Cassano allo Ionio. He was born 28 June 1873 to Biase Foscaldi and Carmela Brandi. Vincenzo married Agata Serra (also of Cassano) who was born about 1876 to (I believe) Antonio Serra and Carolina DeGaudio. Vincenzo immigrated to the US in about 1903 and eventually settled in South Boston, MA. According to the ship manifest he was coming to see his brother-in-law Salvatore Molito. The US Census indicates that there was a Salvatore Molito in South Boston (1910) who immigrated from Cassano with his wife Marianna. Sorry for the long message but I'm hoping some of these names will ring a bell somewhere. Peace.

Hi foles63 and welcome to Gente. Maybe you'd like to add all of your family surnames to the surname database (people searching the site can then contact you). If you go back to the main page of this site you will see a forum for surnames.

Are you looking for any additional information on family members? Let us know and again, welcome to Gente!

I found the manifest for Salvatore Molito

First Name: Salvatore
Last Name: Molito
Ethnicity: Italian
Last Place of Residence: Tassano T.
Date of Arrival: Jan 03, 1900
Age at Arrival: 33y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Chateau Yquem
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0019

He was traveling with his wife Anna

First Name: Anna
Last Name: Molito
Ethnicity: Italian
Last Place of Residence: Tassano T.
Date of Arrival: Jan 03, 1900
Age at Arrival: 30y Gender: F Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Chateau Yquem
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0020

So Anna could be the sister of Vincenzo or of Vincenzo's wife. Unfortunately the manifest lists Anna's last name the same as her husband. If you'd like me to post the original manifest please let me know.

Elizabeth,

Thanks for your help. I have seen that ship manifest. It's so frustrating that Anna's last name is omitted. I am fairly confident that Anna is either Vincenzo or Agata's sister. Oh well, the search continues. Also, thanks for directing me to the surname list. I'll get right on that. I'm sure it will be helpful. Thanks again for the tip.

Hi Steve

I found the following Italian enlistments for Vincenzo and Salvatore Molito. I used the Cosenza archives site 88.59.143.158/ascs_web/index.faces to find these records. You have to register to use the site and it's free.

Vincenzo Foscaldi

Salvatore Molito

You can use the site and search for more family members and their records. One of our members, Cathy, is very familiar with this site and also has a website called www.cosenzaexchange.com that you might like to visit. If you have any trouble with the Cosenza Archive site I'm sure she would be glad to answer your questions and help out.

Thanks again, Elizabeth for the helpful direction. I took the time to register at that site before getting back to you (couldn't wait). Anyway, I viewed Gaetano Foscaldi's record and wonder if it is Vincenzo's brother as Gaetano's mother's name appears to be Carmela Di Praino not Carmela Brandi. Maybe a second marriage or recording error? In any event, I've a lot more to go on now thanks to you. Peace.

Hi Steve you're correct the record for Gaetano has a different mother so I"m sure it's my mistake. I did find another child for them but I had multiple windows open with records and I must have saved the wrong one .... so sorry. If you don't find another child for them post back and I'll look again to see if I can find the info again.

Elizabeth,

Thanks again. I didn't find any other children for Biase Foscaldi and Carmela Brandi yet but I still have to try the alternate spelling route. It does seem unlikely that they had just the one child but ... Thanks again for taking the time. Peace.

Steve make sure to put a wide range of years to search. I stopped at 1900 but start with the years around 1845. Also make sure to check off the gender (M/F) I got better results when I selected an actual gender rather than leaving it blank. Let me know what you find Smile One other thing, you may want to check other towns listed too. Cathy gave you a link with a map on your other post so check the surrounding towns that come up in your query also.

If you do not choose a range of years you get more records. Once you put in a range of years all you get are births. Leave it as it is and you get marriages and deaths too.
