I am in need of suggestions or advice. Any help would be appreciated.
What I know
I have learned from the Catasto that there were no Napolitano's born in Montalto until Arcangelo moved there from Belsito. The Cosenza archive has no Napolitano's up on the archive that were born in Belsito from 1809 on. The majority of Napolitano's in Cosenza on the archive were born in Montalto and although many other Cosenza Province towns had Napolitano's living there, the earliest records (1809-1815) show only about 6 towns. I know my surname is common in Italy and in the U.S., however it was not common in Calabria. The only Napolitano's in all of Calabria back that far lived in Cosenza Province. I am so close to discovering their true origins outside of Calabria!! My ancestor Raffaele was living in the Vaccarizzo frasione of Montalto and married to Diana Corno in 1767 and this is the earliest proof of him in Montalto (I got that from a baptism record). I do not have records from the church of Vaccarizzo and do not believe those records for that far back exist anymore. My objectives now (if possible) are to find Raffaele's place of birth and find the original region of Italy where the Napolitano's came from. I know the name came from Napoli but I want to find Raffaele's father Paolo and his mother's name. I want to get as far back as absolutely possible. I may have reached the end already, however I cannot give up until I know that is a fact and have exhausted every possibility.
My questions
So these are my questions. I do not know where else to ask.
The catasto for Belsito was done in 1742. It is not listed on the archive as being available for purchase. Does this mean I cannot purchase it? Is there a way to purchase just the indexes or find a way to know if any Napolitano's were in this Catasto?
If I write the Priest in the church that has the records in Vaccarizzo for the churches of Vaccarizzo and Parantoro and ask for copies of baptisms and a marriage record (or an extract of the information contained within) without having an exact year, would they respond? Has anyone had any success with church requests?
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go from here?
Thank you.

Hi Cathy. The catasto may not be available for sale but the Archives may suggest someone who they trust to research it for you. The research in the catasto held in Naples suggested a researcher who is would go through the 1752 Catasto, Roccapiemonte, for family information. The cost was 150 euros.

If the Archives does not suggest someone you may have to contact possible researchers your self.

I have had some luck with the Church in my area.

Hi Cathy,

If you are interested, send me a PM and I can share the name of a researcher near Naples who offered to do the Catasti Onciaro for Corato for me.....I did not use him, he was recommended by another Gente member. The price was 200 Euros. He was fairly close by, otherwise you also need to pay travel expenses.

Thanks Charlie and Lilbees. Researchers cost more than the actual entire Catasto! Shocked I will find a way...if not I will have to wait until next year and go to Italy and do my own research there. I guess I will write the archives of Cosenza next. I have written them before so I have names... I was just hoping to find a way to know if there were Napolitano's in Belsito then. I did not find any during the stato period. I was just hoping someone knew if the archives would check the index prior to ordering or what I could expect from the Churches.

Hi Cathy. I learned the Catasti for Roccapiemonte (copy) would be 500 euros. It is at the Naples Archives. Salerno Archives had a microfilm but not way to copy that much from it.

Translated to US that is a lot of money for just one family.
