Charlie.

I live in Chatham Towers cross the street from Chatham Green. Park Row separates both buildings. So it's really close to me. You peaked my interests and I'll continue to look for Roosevelt Street.

Roosevelt Street. (M18-M20) A street formerly running from Park Row to the East River, parallel to and one block west of James Street Part of it was demapped about 1947 for the Alfred E Smith Houses and the balance in the 1950s for the Chatham Green apartments.

Nick

I spoke again with my cousin Jack. He remembers our family being very rich.
He remembers a bar/restaurant. The funny thing is that two brothers met him. One was very rich with gold bathrooms in his house. He was the richest in town and the other was very poor. He stayed with the poor one. I don't believe they had running water. He remembers an outside bathroom. This poor brother was a craftsmen making hand crafted furniture.
We have to find a home address so we can communicate with them. We may have other relatives in the US. There remains a third original brother. I wonder if came to the US and still has family here.

Charlie,

I have found the resting place of the St. Rocco statue which was paraded through the streets during the festival. The original statue is housed behind glass in Transfiguration Church on Mott Street. I think it's the only thing remaining from Roosevelt Street and that era.

Charlie

Many street names remain but they were rerouted. My home in west of Chatham Square where Park Row starts, actually where the Row is on the map. My Grandfather had a Butcher shop at 40 Mulberry street. I remember how Italian this neighbor was and how much it has changed. I still see the faces and the fondly remember the Italian spoken in the streets. I moved here for it, to be near my roots. It's almost all gone now. Un percato.

Hi Joe,

That is really nice that you were able to live back where you grew up; I guess the changes to the neighborhood are overwhelming. I live about 15 minutes from my childhood home.

I remember that my sister and her husband took my Mom back to the area where she had lived (Roosevelt Street) when I was about 8-9 years (1955-56) old. I don't remember whether the buildings were still there or if they had already been torn down.

In tracing my Mom's "roots" every place she had lived in NY is gone --- she was born in Hornell, NY and her street became part of a park; they lived in either Greigsville and/or Retsof (Town of York) and the "Italian Colony" of the "company town" that housed the salt miners was disassembled and trucked away.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...,_New_York

And then her tenement building in Lower Manhattan was demolished. Her home in PA is still there.

My daughter bought me a wonderful book which described all the neighborhoods in Manhattan as the city grew and expanded.

Nick

I have some more information. Again, I am relying on memory. My cousin Jack remembers that our family lived on top of a hill accessible only by a tram.
I don't know if it's so but maybe it still exists. I wish there was a way to find out.

Have a Merry Christmas and don't forget to visit if you are in NYC.

Hi,
I was trying to access the images of the documents on the Cosenza Archive website: 88.59.143.158/ascs_web/index.faces
for: Giuseppe Sebastiano Stefano Mirabelli born January 12 1871. Is there any way anyone can get the images of this document for me?
Thanks so much,
Nick

Hi, my family also comes from Cassano al Ionio. have you looked through the records on the Family Search site?? If you haven't, it's another free site. You can browse through Birth, Marriage & Death records. here's the link for the town: familysearch.org/searc...%3D2043557
