I have a great grandfather "William Greco" who immigrated to America with his parents (around 1899), his name may have been Guglielmo. He was born 11 Feb 1879 in and bragged of being a Calabrese. I am searching for the city he may have been born in and possibly info on this parents.

Also did the Greco family go by "Greek" in Italy?

ANY hint of any information would be wonderful, we have been searching for years with no help.

Answers to these questions would help.

His parents' names
Where they lived in the US
Siblings
His wife and children's names and where they lived

Biff83, Thank you for your reply. I don't know his parents names, only that they lived in Italy when he was born. He was 1 of 6 Children, (Nelly, joseph, Jelly, Adeline, and Micheal were his siblings).

William lived in Pennsylvania by 1902 when he married Rosa Pinto (also an Italian immigrant). But I have no information on when he immigrated and can't find any record of it. I have info on his children, such as dates and locations but none of those records give me any info on Williams parents or birth city.

To make things more complicated, I am guessing William's name might not have been William originally but possibly Guglielmo...I find it hard to believe that an Italian boy in late 1800's would be named William.

ANY help would be appreciated! Thank you!

CantonoFamily,

I'm trying to narrow the search parameters.

Where in PA did William and Rosa live?
What were their children's names?
Did any of Willliam's siblings come to the US? And if so, do you know where they might have lived?

William and Rosa lived in Wind Gap, Northampton, Pennsylvania, United States, because their son, Leon was born there May 29 1912. Sorry I listed that he had 6 siblings above, however those were actually William's children (Leon's siblings). My great grandfather Leon was the baby of the family. I have no info on Williams siblings, (if he had any) or his parents. Only his birthdate.

This is a start. I found the family in 1910 living in Bushkill, Northampton County in PA. William's occupation is a blacksmith working in a slate quarry. Immigration year 1898, naturalized. Family indexed under surname Gress.

World War I Draft Reg Card for William Gregory Gress states birthdate 11 Apr 1877 and that he had filed first papers but was not yet naturalized. Birthplace given as Italy with no town mentioned. Nearest relative wife Rosa.
Occupation blacksmith working at the Alblon Bangor Slate Company. Living on Broadway St, Wind Gap.

This is the death certificate for Leon's brother Joseph Greco who died at Misercordia Hospital in Philly from a gun shot wound on 7 Dec 1933. I'm wondering if the family moved to Philly since I haven't been able to locate them in the 1930 census in Northampton county.

CantonoFamily,

Do you know if Rosa died and William remarried? I believe Rosa died he remarried a Catherine Amato who was a widow; her husband's surname was Montefusco. If I'm correct, I have the family in the 1930 and 1940 censuses living in Philadelphia. Also, he would have had another child with Rosa, Rose Greco born about 1929.

Possible 1946 death certificate for William Greco.

Thank you for all your help! This is wonderful news. Yes, Rosa died May 1926 and William did marry Catherine Montefusco but I don't have a date. Any information on this Rose child would would be great, or any other possible children. I don't have access to ancestory.com so this is all so helpful. I guess I need to get a subscription. Thank you!!

CantonoFamily,

The following links to view records are from familysearch, a FREE site. You might need to register to view the records but you do not have to pay anything. I'm going to check to see what records I located on Ancestry which are also on Familysearch and list them in a subsequent reply.

The following is a link to the 1940 Philly census for William with his second wife and family. Note that it shows daughter Rosa's age as 11 which would mean she was born after Rosa Pinto Greco's death. Starts line 59

familysearch.org/ark:/...cc=2000219

1930 census for William and second wife Catherine. Again, shows Rosa born about 1929 based on her age. Starts at line 30.

familysearch.org/ark:/...cc=1810731

Records from Familysearch previously posted. You should be able to view these.

1910 census from Bushkill PA. Starts line 60

familysearch.org/ark:/...cc=1727033

1920 census from Wind Gap. Starts line 70

familysearch.org/ark:/...cc=1488411

NOT previously posted. William Greco WWII Draft Card

familysearch.org/ark:/...cc=1861144

The Pennsylvania Death Certificate database in not on Familysearch. But if you are a Pennsylvania resident you should be able to view these for free.

I'll see what else I can find. Based on his WWI Draft Card showing his name as William Gregory Greco, I've been want exploring possibility that Gregory (Italian Gregorio) might have been the name on his immigration record.

Later,
Biff

Here is an interesting 1899 immigration record for a Gregorio Greco, born about 1875, married, last residence Montauro, a town in the province of Catanzaro in the region of Calabria. Destination Boston. Joining no one. Worth keeping for future reference.

www.libertyellisfounda...5pZmVzdCI7

Also a 1900 manifest for a Gregorio Greco, born about 1872, single, last residence Maierato, currently in the province of Vibo Valentia, region of Calabria. I'm fairly certain that Maierato was in the province of Reggio Calabria in 1900. Destination Pittsburgh to join brother Durante?

www.libertyellisfounda...5pZmVzdCI7

Both are worth keeping for future reference but I'd have more confidence if the occupation on either of these would have been blacksmith rather than a laborer.
