Thank you very much for your service and the time you are spending on helping me. According to what my family remembers William immigrated in 1898, so the 1898 records may be him. If I am correct the south of italy was very poor at this time, many men were "laborers" though they had talents in many other fields. On one of the censuses you gave me listed he was 18 at his first marriage, which would have been 1897, right before his immigration! I had no idea he was married before Rosa ( in 1902). You are so talented at finding these things. Grazie!

In my recent searches, I have found Gregorio as a last name but never for a first name. According to the www William in Italian is Guglielmo. I'm looking for a marriage certificate for any Greco/Gress from 1893-1895 in the Calabria area. Thank you for all your help it has been a great help.

At this point, we really aren't positive what William's name was--Gugliemo, Gregorio or possibly something else. Nor do we have a definitive town of birth. The two manifests I posted really are only long shots so there's no way to say what his marital status was when he came over. He might have been single or married. If he was married, his wife may have died in Italy or refused to emigrate to the states which was not uncommon.

The "Gress" surname doesn't exist in Italy but Greco does. That's the only thing we know for certain. But searching for an Italian marriage record for him throughout the hundreds of villages and towns in the region of Calabria is impossible.

I've been helping someone else locally the last couple of days but am going to give another hard look to see if I can move the ball backwards.

Later,
Biff
