Hello everyone!
I did a general surname search at the Family Search website (LDS)
and did not find my grandparents listed..according to birthdates or town.
My grandfather's surname was D'Angelo and there are tons of them but none listed that match his birthdate nor the comune. (Casacanditella)
I did check for the comune to see if any records are on microfilm and there are some Very Happy
My question: Just because they are not listed by doing a general search does that mean that no info on them was microfilmed? Is the stuff on microfilm only for the people that are found under the general search category?
Thanks for any info

Lib
The surname could have been mis spelled.

Also if you post the info here, several members have different subscriptions and may be able to find something for you.

Absolutely not! The surnames on the LDS site were submitted by family researchers like us. The upload their gedcom file and what you have there is the result. Also, I have found problems with some of the information there...because it is submitted by family researchers. The microfilms are on a whole different database.

Thanks, Nuccia

The microfilmed records for Casacanditella are from 1809 to 1900.
Both of my grandparents were born in the late 1880's so I don't think I would find any marriage records. Hopefully birth records and maybe stuff on *their* parents. Difficult though because I have so little to go on.

Things I have found:

Ship manifests for my grandmother. She came over in 1920 on the Dante Alighieri. She traveled with her daughter, my aunt.

Ship manifest (95%) sure for my grandfather (my mom said he went to Canada and was a citizen there and traveled back and forth to Italy and was here in the states approx 9 yrs before my grandmother was able to join him.) The manifest I found was from St Salt Marie. I can't put my fingers on it right now. I have stuff spread out all over, LOL. I need to get organized!

WW1 draft registration

1930 census (California) Grandfather listed as Antone D'Angelo
It says my grandfather was naturalized but the printout I made is too light to read if my grandmother was. I do know she became a citizen
because I remember her studying when I was a child. In all honesty, I don't know the difference between being naturalized and being a citizen or what the difference is.

California Death index for both

Grandmother: Giovina Rapposelli (maiden name)
Lists *Francesco* as her father
Birthdate: 4/25/1883
[b] I just re looked at the printout from the manifest (from Ancestry)
and they list her birth location as Chieti but my mom says she thinks they were both born in Casacanditella. (the place that is listed as her last place of residence) I think Casacanditella is the comune, correct? Chieti the province?

Grandfather: Antonio D'Angelo
Birthdate: 5/20/1887
I believe in Casacanditella as well

I was excited beyond words to learn that grandmother's father's first name was Francesco! My mom never knew any of her grandparents and does not remember any first names Sad

I know they settled at first in Ironwood Michigan and my grandfather worked in the mines. My mom and her brother and sister were all born at home in Michigan. I cannot locate them on any census prior to 1930.

My grandmother went by *Julia* here in the USA
I hope the records on microfilm will at least give me a lead on my grandparents *parents* and their names

Sorry if I have gone on and on and ON

Sounds like you've done a lot of research already and so its time to go back one more generation. Have you considered writing away to Italy for the records?

Thank you Cathy! I think what I will do is order a few records from Casacanditella and a few from Chieti..I went back to the website and there is separate microfilm for Chieti.
Nuccia, yes I am thinking it's almost time to write to Italy.
You all are so helpful and it's so appreciated.
Cathy, I loved reading *the story* about your grandmother. Quite a mystery.
My mother just told that she think my grandparents were married in Casacanditella and that they were married twice because my grandmother's father didn't think the first marriage was legal. Hmmmm!

I could kick myself for not asking questions years ago when everyone's memory was still intact! Better late than never though.
Again, thank you both.

Lib,

Even though the LDS microfilms don't include the time period that you think your ancestors would have been married, I have found that the birth records often include later information about those ancestors as well. If you can find the birth records, they may include annotations on the side that indicate if, when, and to whom the person was married, as well as when they died if all of these events happened in the same comune.

Anyway, good luck with your search!

Thanks for your thoughts and experiences, JB. I've been so darn busy at work that I haven't had a chance to get back to the person at the church to order the films. Hopefully by the end of the week I can order them!
Again, thank you

It would be so awesome if all of the films were available online and indexed on the computer, wouldn't it? My Family History Center is only open T,W,R and Saturday, so I usually wind up going after work during the week. I always feel find of bad, since I'm usually the only person there in the evening and I bet the people that work there would leave earlier if I weren't there.... I would *totally* buy a microfilm reader if you could actually check the films out like a library book....

Hi JB. LDS is going to be putting the films on the internet. They said it will take a few more years but eventually it will be available. Doesn't help any of us right now but it will be nice to have it at some point. The people at my center also said that Ancestry.com use to be free at the centers for people researching and once they found out about LDS putting the info on the internet for free, they pulled the free usage from them.

One other note.......my center is only open W Th 10-2 and 7-9 and Sat 10-2 and only have a few machines. Makes it tough sometimes. I wish they'd just copy each microfilm to CD's and let you buy the CD you need. Oh well, it's been lots of fun and I'm learning loads.
