I just got my ggf's lista di leva from Reggio Calabria (note that this was free of charge, Yipee!) My GGF left for NY when he was 19 (arriving in NYC in 1903) and from what I can understand, the lista di leva simply says that he was called to arms in 1904, found to have left the country for NY and was therefore unfit to serve.

Here is my question. We don't know what happened to my GGF after 1911 when his wife died in NYC. I searched the NYC online indices for his death and found nothing. One story is that he died shortly after his wife died. If he returned to Italy at age 27 in 1911, would the draft board then try to find him to make him serve? Can I make any assumptions that if there is no other comment from the draft board other than that he was not in Italy in 1904, that perhaps he never returned to Italy? Does anyone have any thoughts or theories to help me brain storm?

If they found him then I believe there would be a notation on the record. That doesn't mean he didn't return to Italy, just that they didn't find him. That would be my assumption..of course, Riccardo or some of the others might know better.

Thanks, Nuccia. Maybe they stopped looking after a few years? He was definitely in the US from 1903 to 1911 and then, who knows?

I am no expert here but they were automatically drafted at 18 right? So if they returned several years later were they required to report to the military? At some point, wouldn't that draft expire? If he was gone 8 years, I would doubt it if they still wanted him for the draft. Riccardo would definitely know. Maybe Jim knows?

Well when I received my grandfathers draft records it seems that he was drafted again in 1939 for WW2. It only lasted nine days and I guess they realized he was too old to serve so they released him permanently (he was released after WW1 but they called him back).

Amazing how my remembers him leaving once I showed him the records...

I heard stories of the military personnel grabbing people at the airport who dodged the draft once they returned so I'm really not sure they would have stopped searching for him.

Thanks for all of your ideas. I guess it is possible that he died before WW2 and maybe even before WWI. Do you think it is permature to write to everyone in the town with his surname? There are 6 people. I know the name of one sibling who never left Italy but I have not done the entire tree and have not gotten the names of any more siblings. I sent one letter out like a year ago but no response. Sad
