|
Maybe Nuccia had me up on Skype too late last night but I am a little confused with information on this pubblicazione I am attempting to transcribe. I hope someone can help. The groom's mother is listed as ignato - I understand that - she is unknown. But his father's information is what I do not understand. I am not sure if this is a name or a word (like ignato was). I have never seen this name - geniale. The a may be an o. The g appears to not be capitalized, there is no age listed but the person who wrote these records for this year left that blank on most of the pubbs. The profession is listed though - laborer. So my question: is Geniale a name or a word and if it is a name why would the mother be ignato? Is this an adopted father?
Thanks.

Cathy,
Ignoto and ignota are masculine and feminine versions of the word; in my Italian dictionary GENIALE means: ingenious, of genius; bright or brilliant idea --- doesn't seem to work on a Pubblicazione di Matrimonio. Are you sure of the spelling? Is this listed as his professione?

Sorry, I should have provided a link to the document. Whatever possessed me to transcribe all the documents for the whole town?! I wish my grandfather came from a smaller town!
Here's the link to the document:

Cathy, the word seems to be Geniale (with a capital G), however I do not recognize Geniale as a first name. The fact that the mother is "ignota" (unknown), is something that happens, at least in Italy: both the father and the mother may not recognize the child.
I understand that you have easy access to all documents in Montalto, if this is the case you may check Fedele Fava's birth record. He was probably born in 1870...

Thanks. I have seen many of these documents with unknown parents but never saw anything else written in the section for the parents before. I will check the birth record as you suggest.

Cathy,
I'm sure Geniale is a first name albeit an uncommon one. In a recent letter from one of the Epifanos whom I contacted in Italy, Giovanna Epifano stated that she was the daughter of Geniale Epifano.
BTW, Isabelle Anne gets prettier each day. Saturday she attended her cousin's third birthday party and today she went to Church and also went on her first shopping trip to Babys R Us.

Thanks Biff. As Livio suggested I will have to check the birth record and confirm. I Hate the birth acts from 1870-1874!! They are not forms and all handwritten by a man with very bad handwriting. I think this will be on the back burner for a while. I am so happy Isabelle is doing well. So where are the pictures? All of us moms are dying to see more!

Cathy,
You need to take a break from all those records. I don't know how you do it. I was attempting to transcribe one year this weekend and I was going nuts.
Biff,
Yes, more pictures of Isabelle please!

Rumor has it that the records are now being digitally encoded by the FHL in Salt Lake City so that someday we will be able to access them by computer (don't know if you will be able to do this from home). There are two reasons for this -- first to safeguard the records as apparently the microfilm is beginning to deteriorate as microfilm does not last forever, and of course to take advantage of the newer technology.
Supposedly this is why getting films from SLC has taken very long lead times (at least in my experience so far since January), as the volunteers there are now working on the new transition project and there are fewer people available to fill the microfilm orders.
Since I have completed about 30 out of 80 reels of film for my Paternal family, hopefully someday I will be doing this by computer instead of an old microfilm reader.

Charlie,
That's no rumor! They are scanning the microfilms (just like I am) as we speak! They are working on the US census now. The director of my FHC told me they were working on American records first. Some people on this forum have worked on the transcriptions of the censuses. You can too, if you would like to. Nuccia has the link (I think) if you want more information on this. I think it will take years to get everything they have on microfilm online. But I cannot wait!

I had the link but it left with my old computer! I worked on it for a while and I also help transcribe for the 1941 Census Records last year.
Maybe Liz has the link. I'll ask her and let you know.

Nuccia or Cathy,
Does anyone know if the plan is to allow remote access (from home) via the internet, or will you still need to go to the the local FHC? It would be great if that is the case, so you can do your research on your own schedule. I have had to wait really long times lately for films to come in --- one took over 3 months.
thanks,

You will be able to access them on their website. I keep asking if they are going to charge and they tell me no. This project will take years though. I had a film take that long too. The director at my center told me that part of the problem is in the past when all of a specific microfilm was out, they would make another copy and send it out. Now, they wait a couple of months to see if one of the copies comes back. If it does not after a couple of months, then they copy it. Also, they have the majority of the staff working on the transcriptions and copying the microfilms, so less staff is available for send out microfilms. I can't wait until they get the Italian records online! But, I think that is years down the road.
