People can say what they will about Ancestry.com but they have surely outdone themselves this time. They have now added the areas of Como and Lecco, apparently they are intending to do the entire Lombardia regione. they are Births, marriages, publicaziones and deaths 1866-1936!!

Lombardia Stato Civile records

This is amazing! The LDS don't even have these available. They are adding records quickly to complete this project. They are original scanned images.

LOOK AT ALL THESE TOWNS!! They are all up in varying degrees and new images are added regularly!

I havent been doing much with genealogy lately, so havent been here much. I stop by occasionally to read..and also stop by occasionally at the Italian Genealogy forum.

I was so excited when I saw this post there, by James.

I didnt think I would ever see Italian records of this type, online, in my lifetime (especially, provided by the mormons).

I think if they are doing this for these places, the others will follow...and take note..they go to 1936..eliminating that awful gap in some towns that only go to the mid 1800s. I have been stuck with two towns like that. Plus this will be so easy..and convenient.

I would gladly pay them double the fee to get what I need in this way.

I tried to send them an email using their contact us link. I was signed into the acct which I once paid for. So, I asked my questions and clicked to sent and it took me to a registration button. Since, I figured, I was already registered..since I was on that acct..could it be only paid members can use that feature?

Maybe someone with a paid acct can try. I dont care about the timeframe..I would just love to know if they intend to do the other regions.

Eleven, I never ever thought I would see the day these records would be online either. It isn't just Italy, they are undertaking similar projects all over Europe. The LDS church is also trying to get new amazing images up on their new Labs website. If you haven't seen it by all means have a look, its incredible (and free!)

LDS Family Search Labs Page

Oh and Carole!! Please share with us what you are finding on Ancestry via these new records. I am quite curious.

I will take a look at that, James.

Ya know, I am reaching the 15 year mark of my research. I started it because my aunt had contact with some other relative, who told her we decended from greek royalty (eyeroll). You just know, I had to prove this one wrong...which I did, about 8 years ago.

In the beginning, it was slow going...there was NO internet. The only online info I got was from forums on the prodigy services and most people werent doing Italian genealogy. Letter writing and the FHL got me thru the next few years, before the net developed into what we see now.

Once I came to these roadblocks with the gap in FHL records, I became a bit disheartened..so I slowed down quite a bit, other than a little letter writing to rionero, my moms town and then the ancestry censuses provided me with more info. I was able to search those at my leisure, so got much more out of it, than if I was doing it outside the home.

The thing that made me lose heart the most was never being able to find the siblings of my grandparents. I am so sure, my grandfather is the 3rd son..that I would be willing to make a cash bet..only, there was no way other than hiring someone to go there and search, for me to get that info. I even sent to the town, using the two names I think these siblings should have had..and a timeframe for birth. They sent me my money back..lmao

This situation put a big damper on my desire to actively search. Your post perked me right up, tho..lol..because if they get this town out there..I can get what I need.

I would just like to say that I did two outstanding things in my lifetime, that gave me my greatest rewards..one is having my children..and the two is having done this genealogy. There is nothing like knowing..who you are..and who came before you. Heh..now, I wonder which one of them had this blasted psoriasis that I was diagnosed with last year...lol In many cases, its in the genes.

I checked out their site, there on he fhl. Nice try. I did some searches that I have already found. Some on their ship passenger and some on their 1900 census. No hits...and I know these people are there.

I did better on ancestry when they first began offering the censuses...and this includes using their old clunky software to search.

I know its a work in progress, so I hope this gets better...for people who actually need the info.

It is amazing actually, they have the entire District of Coutances France original Church records, they also have the West Virginia and Ohio vital records. I would not really use the Labs for passenger lists, they are already online via Steve Morse and Ancestry. The beauty of the LDS labs is the incredible amount of original scanned images.

Things such as Original Deeds books from Vermont, English, French and German church records (original images), and so much more. New records are going up daily. Not everything is complete, you can see a status bar above when you click on the item.

They are doing an incredible job. Trust me on that!

I bookmarked it..so I will be checking on it.

I find this every exciting..both places..ancestry and the FHL

When I first started doing my genealogy, I would daydream about being able to have records available to me, in my home..be it online or borrowing with a reader.

The time always seemed so short when going to the FHL..and I always felt rushed..to try and get as much as I could.

I had already looked at censuses, 15 years ago, yet, I missed things that I was able to find when I viewed them on ancestry from home. I even found some friend or relative (relation not clear) of my grandfather, by going page by page, looking for a familiar name. I didnt even know the guys name....but thru the ancestry census...I found him. I could have never done this kind of searching on the outside. I tried.
