Here is a link to an interesting article on the first family's ancestry. Notice they only used one surname Megan Smolynek Smolynek (the DNA guru). LOL.

His sister is very pretty. I didnt notice her...or any of his family, yesterday. I did see Michelles brother quite a few times tho. Its a shame his grandmother passed away, just before she could see all of this.

I came home and was able to watch part of the ceremony. Since I don't normally follow politics (and since I am Canadian) I wasn't sure who her family was. I feel bad his grandmother wasn't there although I am sure she was proud of him.

What I REALLY liked is the fact that he made a slip with some parts of his vows (? Is that the correct term for it). It showed he was human but I swear I don't know how both he and his wife kept just control of their emotions.

Regardless, whether a person supported him or not, the fact that history was made is still the same and I was glad to have been able to share that with my daughter.

That wasnt his fault..

Justice Roberts Flubs Obama Oath Of Office

WASHINGTON — Chief Justice John Roberts swore in Barack Obama as president Tuesday in the first of what could be many important interactions for the two men of differing politics who rose quickly to power. The encounter was briefly awkward after Obama stepped on Roberts' opening lines from the 35-word constitutionally prescribed oath of office. The chief justice then wandered into a verbal detour of his own.

By tradition, the presidential oath is administered by the chief justice, and in Roberts' case, it was his first inauguration since joining the Supreme Court in 2005.

Obama used the Bible on which Abraham Lincoln took the presidential oath in 1861. Roberts concluded the oath by adding, "So help you God?" And Obama, following a practice established by George Washington and followed by most presidents, replied: "So help me God."

Other than social encounters and official events, Obama and Roberts will likely see little of each other while overseeing their branches of government. Obama's legal team could be called upon to defend the president's most important policies in front of Roberts and his conservative-leaning court.

Oh no..I don't think it was anyone's fault personally. I think it was very human and it can happen to anyone. Haven't you ever have to make a speech before or recite a line and make a mistake? Like I said, it kept it real and not researched. I like that.

BTW..thanks for posting the article. Smile

I thought that service was very moving and I watched it from begining to end. It was history in the making and I was moved when Obama mentioned about years past when his grandparents not being allowed to sit in a cafe to have a coffee and here he was now President of the USA.
So sad that all that had to happen in the past for we all have a right to live and be treated with respect in this world no matter what creed or colour we are.
It was on our news that later Obama did take the Oath of Office again in front of some reporters just in case something cropped up later to say that the first one wasnt legal.

May God Help Him in his difficult job ahead of him.

Really? I am not that good with Politics (OK, I stink really) but why might it not be considered legal? I don't understand.

You know, he really does have a difficult road ahead of him and Jen and I were talking about the things that happened to many African Americans just before he made that comment which made me happy because it confirmed the message I was trying to get out to her. I also appreciated the reference to all the immigrants that have faced issues when arriving in the US...some of which we have talked about here on various threads.

Post thought: Do you think someone has already done Obama's genealogy for him...? It would be interesting to see, wouldn't it?

They worried about it being illegal because that oath is supposed to be said exactly, word for word..and it wasnt. So, I guess before those people who arent thrilled with obama having won, had something to say about it, they made sure they had him redo it.

Nuccia, they did do his genealogy already because somehow he is distantly related to Dick Cheney! LOL. When I saw him speak in my state on the campaign trail, he was cracking jokes about his cousin Dick. I will search on line and see what I can find. I think his mother's side has slave owners in it, which is also fascinating.
