Here is a link to some oldies but goodies sung in Italian. There are so many that bring me back to my teenage years. As a matter of fact, I still have 45's of some of them, but nothing to play them on. So, when I get nostalgic, I go to this site.

I find the rendition of "Vitti na Crozza" hauntingly beautiful even though the subject matter is somewhat gruesome.

OK Mary - I give up! What is the subject matter?

Oh what a great site Mary....Thank You kiss

I've just spent a good while wandering down memeory lane. It's even got the Zanicchi song that always managed to bring a tear to my eye, and it did just that again this afternoon... sooooo sad!

Cathy, this song was written for a movie called "Il Cammino della Speranza" (The Walk of Hope) in 1950. I am not sure what the subject of the movie is about, but the song deals with a passerby seeing a skull on a castle rampart (apparently the way an old Sicilian ruling regime deald with people who committed crimes was to cut off their heads and display them on the castle rampart to discourage others). A man walking by sees the skull and begins speaking to it. The skull complains that he died without even one bell toll (another indignity he was made to suffer).

Carol, La Riva Bianca, La Riva Nera is also one of my favourites.

Wow, thanks, that is a wonderful site. I have spent the morning drifting back and forth through the list and listnening to some of the songs. I probably should have stopped a while ago! But I was having too much fun. I started by listening to the classics that I already knew:

Mino Reitano - Calabria Mia
Tino Rossi - Santa Lucia
Massimo Ranieri - Lacreme Napulitane
Mario Merola - Tarentella napoletana
Luciano Pavarotti - O Sole Mio and Funiculi - Funicula

but along the way I found some gems that I had never heard before like:
Massimo Ranieri - Vent'anni
Renato Rascel - Ninna Nanna del Cavallino

and you haven't lived until you have listened to some of the American songs with Italian lyrics such as:
Petula Clark - Ciao, ciao (Downtown)
Fausto Leali - Senza Luce (A Whiter Shade of Pale), Aspettero (Unchained Melody) and Quando Ami Una Donna (When a Man Loves a Woman)

I just have to say that Ciao, ciao sounds every bit as good as it does with American lyrics and has about the same meaning. Senza Luce doesn't make any more sense in Italian than it did in English. And I never laughed so hard in my life as when I read the words to Quando Ami Una Donna, as the changes in the Italian lyrics truly do reflect the way that Italian men feel in love. ROTFL.

My 7 year old daughter found the site fun also. Her favorites were:
Quartetto Cetra - I Tre Porcellini (The Big Bad Wolf)
Quartetto Cetra - Crapa Pelada
Renzo Arbore - Bongo, Bongo, Bongo
Ornella Vanoni - Stupidi

Thanks again, and I really enjoyed the site.

Donna
