I have a vinyl LP of myuncle, who was a locally popular singer in CA. I would like to make a copy for my cousin in Italy. This is an ignorant question on my part, but if I tape it to a cassette tape, does Europe use the same sized tapes as we do? I think this is probably the easiest do-it-yourself option. I am not sure how I would get vinyl to a CD on my own.

Could you get a cable long enough to record it to your computer as a series of MP3s? Software packages like GoldWave can record for longer than 30 seconds.

Then it could be burned to CD or simply e-mailed.

Wow..thats so cool. I have a million albums it seems (my kids get a big kick out of the big "CD's) and I always wondered how I might be able record them. This is definitely something I'm going to pursue!

Cassette tapes are the same both here in England and Europe as they are in the USA.
The only things that I remember were the Video tapes that were different some were Betamax or VHS, then they all went VHS.

I just wanted to build on this thread, in case any of our European posters can chime in. My mom was thinking of sending a home video for the holidays to our new cousins in Italy. I know there are some compatibility issues. Does Europe use the same VHS or DVDs as the United States? What are the compatibility issues?

All VHS tapes are comatible nowadays I believe. But I can remember when I visited in 1993 and in 2002 (before DVD's) I was asked where I wanted to use the videao tapes that I was buying. (must have been my accent that gave away the fact that I wasnìt a 'local' Wink ). I was then sold tapes that had stickers on saying "English use".

With DVD's I believe (and please correct me if anyone knows differently) that the question of compatibility lies with the DVD recorder/played and NOT with the disc itself. Therecording and playing equipment has to be tuned in to the TV systems over here.

A good example of the difference was my two almost new TV sets that came with me when I moved over from the UK for the last time in 2004. I could get a picture but NO audio at all unless I went with Skye satellite reception.

SO - BEFORE YOU BUY - ASK! I'M SURE A GOOD RETAILER WILL BE ABLE TO TELL YOU.....

This is a link for PLAYERS:

Here - scroll down to post No.2 it is very informative.....

Thanks, Carole! it seems that perhaps it may be easier to figure out how to make a recording on my digital video camera and e-mail it to them or upload it to the web.

I just couldnt believe my eyes when I read this post. I had just been discussing the same questions about DVD's with my relative in US -could I transfer a video recording to a DVD and send it to US. We both thought video's would not work but that DVD's were 'universal' if that's the word to use. Seems we were wrong!!
Thanks for the links Carol.
I have tried sending a video redording from the digital camera via email and that has worked but I doubt if the image would come out if I was using the D.camera video option to film from video being played on the TV.
