For months now I have been trying to figure out the easiest, quickest and yet visually appealing way to post the records of Montalto Uffugo on my website. I am trying a few things. I tried this:
www.montaltouffugo.net...THACTS.xls
But I don't think I can link the records on this, can I?
Nuccia helped me do this:
www.montaltouffugo.net...table.html
I can link the records to this but it takes so much time and patience and with everything I have to add I'll never get done. Any suggestions?

Cathy I know what you are trying to accomplish (I have been there). My advice (for what it's worth) is to store and upload everything in Excel (which is what I discovered works best)

www.cariniexchange.org...tions.html

I tried to have the records directly on site, but that doesn't work so well when you have more than a couple dozen. I have something like 40,000 now so you can imagine.

Make an Excel file, upload it to your domain/server and then link it to your website. Put in a disclaimer about how you need Excel to view and even maybe (as I did recently) a link to the free Excel Viewer download for those who don't have it. Here is the link to the free viewer:

Free Excel Viewer

40,000!!! Shocked I'm years away from that! I began storing all the information in Excel from the start (unfortunately my intentions were personal at the time and in the beginning I did not put enough info into my spreadsheets). Here is an example of 1879 Pubblicazione records Is there anyway to link the images to the spreadsheet? I get lots of emails from people who want copies of their relatives records and I tell them to be patient I will put them online as I find them. (until Nuccia talked me into buying my own domain anyway!) The excel viewer is a great idea! If I go with Excel, I will do that. Thanks.

Cathy, in Excel you can add to any cell a link to an URL. In this way you can easily link images to the records in your spreadsheet. You have to click this button in the Excel command line

WOW! Thanks Livio! Very Happy Now to see if it works in my version of Excel. I still have Excel 2000. Sad I should have asked Santa for the latest version of Excel.

Cathy rather than link and upload a spreadsheet, you might be better off creating tables in Word and copying the tables to your page. This is what I have done for example here:

www.cariniexchange.org..._1905.html

The problem with making a page out of Excel directly is that the more records you add and the larger the file, the longer it will take for the page to load.

Then there is the whole scrolling down for ages issue. I would love to (and have tried repeatedly) to just take my extractions and make a page. To date we have all the Baptisms extracted 1881-1905 and all the marriages from 1568 to 1905. The files are far too large. This is what I did:

1. Created a word document with tables to cover the number of pages/images I need to link.

2. Number each cell and then link the cell to the proper image

3. Highlight the table in Word and copy (Ctrl-C)

4. Go to my new page and hit Ctrl-V

Voila, the table and it's links are copied and appear as evenly spaced as they were in word.

Hope that makes sense, I'd be glad to help you further if you need it.

Thanks James! I think it makes sense. Confused It did not occur to me that the links would take the page longer to load. I can't believe you managed to do all that work, get it up on your website and managed to stay sane!
I might try it (after Christmas). Right now, I think I better prepare for Christmas before it is over! I'm a little behind because of my vacation in Naples. Thanks so much for your help.

It isn't so much the links as it is the size of the spread sheet itself. The larger it gets the more tedious it is to use when made into a webpage. Plus an Excel page saved as "Html" becomes huuuuge for some reason.

I didn't know if you knew about that, you can save your excel sheet as an html file (when you click save-as, just change the file type), upload it to your server and it becomes a web page itself. An unruly, lengthy and very large page, but still workable if your database is smallish.
