I think I am late in discovering this, but I saw a press release from June that ancestry.com has launched in Italy as www.ancestry.it

I already see that one person has included a family surname of mine on a tree based in Italy. It may be worth it for those of you with ancestry.com accounts to do some new searches and see if there is anyone in Italy who has included you on their trees. This may also explain why they have begun to add Italian records to their online library.

It appears that there are only two towns with birth, death, and marriage records--Palermo and Falerna. It would be really wonderful if Ancestry would partner with LDS and scan and index the comune microfilms.

The LDS is none too pleased with Ancestry these days. I doubt you will ever see that happen. Many of Ancestry's original records originally came from the LDS microfilms. Since Ancestry pulled the majority of their access in LDS FHC's I don't think they would be too receptive. The records Ancestry has appear to be full color from the thumbnails I saw - much better quality than those old microfilms can give. Catanzaro Jim told us about some time ago but I think Palermo is new.

wow...this is interesting... Any reason why they chose Catanzaro & Palermo?

Ooops! I said Catanzaro (meaning province - not town) but the comune name is actually Falerna as Biff said. Good question. But it appears someone actually went there and photographed or scanned the records right out of the books.
Here is the link Jim provided on the old forum: cariniexchange.com/ima...alerna.jpg

I dont think they will ever get the amount of records that the FHL has. But, if they do..I am signing up. I am all for anything that I can get online. I cant believe how much more you can get, when you are viewing from home, rather than in a public place, having certain hours.

I found things on the ellis island site and the ancestry cencuses..that I would have never found if I had to go someplace to view them. I would never have spent the time.
