Can someone tell me what this says? Babelfish just doesn't work here. I think it translated the surnames too. I don't expect a word for word, just the highlights of what it says. It is about Montalto Uffugo.
Many thanks.

TRANSLATION
Rising 447m above sea level at 22 km from Cosenza on top of a hill,
at the eastern base of the coastal chain the descends down varying slopes to the river Crati valley. The town has a beautiful aspect and stupendous views, chiefly from above from the antique castle of the dukes of Aragon and Toledo, from which the ancient ruins jut out.

Notable is the collegiate church of the Madonna della Serra, so called from the site where it rises, in a majestic flight of steps all faced in minute relief intaglio, which corresponds badly with the remaining bad workmanship.

The church was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1854, a the expense of the people who worshipped a byzantine statue of the Virgin. It also merits mentioning the ex monastery of S.Francesco, built by Alfonso di Aragona, in which he hid the original portrait of the Saint. Of the five monastery's for men and women the principle, that of S.Domenico, was transformed into a municiple palace with offices for the government.

Saved in Montalto are the names of ancient and illustrious families: the dei Nardi, who came fro Florence; the Canagea Family, which legend has it is connected with the above mentioned byzantine sattue; of a Zavarroni, and of the Alimena, Bernaudo, Marimonte, Batoli, Sacchini, Molli, Rossi.

Remember the history that Montalto took part with Cosenza in all the revolts of distant times. It had its coourt of the Inquisition and was the seat of bishops. The territoty produced cereals, wine, oil, fruit, mulberry leaves etc. The industry is represented with the steam spinning of silk, factories and manufacture etc.

Historical signs: An remainder of the ancient Uffugum, city of the Bruzii, destryed by the Saracens, the inhabitants of which, having escaped to the heights, gave the new town the name of it high position.

It was famous in history of the last century for its celebrated academy of the Educated, that counted among its members ordinary men. Illustrious men: Gave light to Carlo and Francesco Nardi, the first a beautiful poet , the second a learned jurisprudent; and Antonio e Angelo Zavarroni, the first a bishop of Tricarico in Basilicata, versed in ecclesiastical matters, the second well read and the author of the Biblioteca Calabra (Calacrian Library) of the most illustrious men of Calabria. Also born there was the skillful canonist Gaetano di Alessandro or d'Alessandro and Panfilo Molli, Raffaele Romano and Isidoro Pace, named in law, literature and medicine.

WOW! Thanks Carole! I did not expect an exact translation. So the Spanish Inquisition was there? Interesting...and this article gave the origins of some surnames there. Very interesting. Thank you so much.
That was most helpful. kiss

Cathy..

Just so you know when Carole hears translation, she gives a word for word translation. She doesn't add or omit from the document, she just translates it as is! Very Happy
