Hi all

I just got back from my FHC and the news they were passing out was that the first of the "digitized" info will be on-line by the end of the year.

I don't know what countries or which info but they all seemed very excited. They said there are over 200 teams working on getting the images on-line.

I can't wait.

I also got an email yesterday that some films are going to be online soon. I'll look for it and post it. Meant to do that but have been a bit busy. I also heard that some one else was investing in Ancestry. I'll go look for the article...

Heres the link to a newsletter I received regarding some Georgia films already online at the LDS site.. It has some other good info that might be of interest to some of our members.

Just got back from the FHC. Yep, records are online already but not at the old site. A new site has been set up for the online records. Currently available is the 1930 census for Georgia. More coming soon. Tis the dawn of a beautiful new era! You must register for the new site WHICH IS A BETA TEST SITE at the moment.
Start here:
FAMILY SEARCH LABS - REGISTER
Then you can go here after your registration has been processed. Warning: You have to wait for an email confirmation.
Below is a link available ONLY TO LDS CHURCH MEMBERS

Hi Everyone,

I'm baaaack.......from my visit to Italy ---- we had a GREAT TIME ---- we drove about 2000KM (~1300 miles or so) ---- visited some new places: Foligno, Perugia (Festivale di Cioccolato), Assisi, Spoleto, Lecce, Ostuni, Monopoli and Bisceglie. We drove and ATE our way from Venezia south to Puglia (where my Dad's Family lives) and then back across to Roma.

I have also been technically challenged since I returned with both ISP issues along with having to migrate to a new PC (and from XP to VISTA) ---- I need to borrow Carole's gun;-)

Charlie

PS The FHC has a new DB called footnote.com ---- this has a variety of data; I was able to download a Petition for Citzenship

Thanks Nucci and Cathy,

I arrived in Venezia, but we stayed just outside the city --- much easier than lugging bags on the vaporetto and then through the city, but you do lose the ambiance of waking up in Venezia which is a special place that everyone must see. We took the train (located behind our hotel) into the city. After two nights we drove to Umbria to the small town of Foligno --- not too much happening there, but it was close to many small cities --- it was hard to choose but we went to Perugia (Festivale di Cioccolato) -- a beautiful old city on the top of a mountain, then we made a short stop at Assisi which was also beautiful (again high on a mountain) and lastly we went to Spoleto which was really very nice --- again lots of history, Roman ruins, some neat restaurants.

We then traveled to Corato, Provincia di Bari where my Dad was born --- it feels like my second home when I am there as I feel that I belong there. We visited my 1st cousin's family (he passed away two years ago) --- he has 4 daughters living there and we had a lot of fun with them. They have a small business (piecework on clothing) so we went to see the laboratorio. I also spent 3 hours in the Biblioteca Communale trying to learn the history of Corato ---- they were very excited and they whipped out about 20 books for me --- of course I basically was looking at the pictures as my Italian is still pretty basic. I even had the guy looking online at the FHC Family Search website --- he went crazy when I put in his Cognome and a bunch of his ancestors came up --- they gave me some books to take back with me and also let me check my email.

While in Corato we also made a day trip to Lecce (past Brindisi at the bottom of the heel) -- another old city with Roman ruins and some beautiful churches and buildings -- we stopped at Ostuni (a Greek looking city, all white buildings on a small hill overlooking the Adriatic -- very nice) and lastly a quick drive thru Monopoli --- we then went to Bisceglie and we walked around this town located near Corato --- also some very old buildings, a beautiful church and the ruins of an old castello.

We got lost when we arrived in Lecce as I took the wrong turn on a traffic circle -- I stopped for directions and the man told me to wait ---- he got his car and led us across town --- stopped to show us the entry (old Porta or Gate into the city) , he then made us follow him some more to show me where I should park ---- he probably spent at least 20 minutes with us. The folks down south are all very friendly and helpful.

While in Corato I stopped to buy fruit for my cousins and I explained to the elderly gentleman that my Grandfather was a "Fruttivendolo" in Corato many years ago --- he doubled the amount of fruit that I had already purchased and then he showed my his registration card with his last name (and I have a great, great grandmother with the same name) plus he was married to a Miscioscia which is my last name; he wanted me to come back the next day for coffee but unfortunately I had no time.

Before I left town I stopped in a new office of the Anagrafe when I stopped to buy some things at the paneficio for the next cousin's vist that day in Foggia --- I got three "complementi" for my Family Tree and also the name of a new priest who he told me was a Visionare Archivi Storici Atti di Nascita, so I hope in the future I will be able to contact him and perhaps be able to gain access to some church records to expand my Family Tree a few more generations back. (I am stalled at ~1750).

Next was Foggia which is a "gritty city" were I have 4 1st cousins --- most of our time was spent with family going to a different house each day --- we also took a trip to Vieste and Peschici which are on the Gargano Penisula ---- Vieste is beautiful --- Peschici is also nice --- getting there was interesting as the road twisted and turned (as in hairpin tiurns) thru the hills while overlooking the Adriatic way below --- there was a Castello in Vieste and there was large rock where 7000 residents werebeheaded by the Turks after they captured the town in the 16th century.

We made a stop in Grottammare where cousin Claudio lives -- unfortunately it was one of the two rainy days we had "pioggia bruto" --- Grottammare is along the Riviera des Palmes and is a beautiful resort --- we spent the day with Claudio and his family looking at old family photos -- we missed out on the trip he had planned for us due to the bad weather.

We ended our trip in Roma for a couple nights before heading back home --- all told I drove about 2000KM so I was ready for a vacation;-)

Charlie Mr. Green

PS - Nuccia, Vista is not too bad but there is a learning curve --- I also need to learn how to tweak it to get rid of some unwanted features which seem to slow it down. It was a pain moving everything from XP (and expensive as I had to buy another copy of MS-Office and some utilities which work with Vista).
PSS -- Once I get my PC and ISP straightened out I will post some pictures

Charlis,

Thank you! I feel like I've just been on a quick tour myself! Sounds like you had quite the holiday. I'll look forward to your pictures now. Not sure if you have already put your family tree on line, but is there a place where we can view it? I can't remember seeing it (but then again, my memory is awful some days..lol).

Meanwhile, hope you've had the chance to check out the new surname database (click on the link at the bottom of the page). You may want to make sure there are no errors in your surnames.

Yes, I heard Vista had a higher learning curve and that it was demanding on the computer. I also just got programs that are compatible with Vista, but I am hesitate about actually installing Vista. I really like XP..we'll see how I feel in a few months.

Look forward to hearing more about your trip soon and to your posts. We missed you! Very Happy

You do have a knack for writing Charlie. As I read your post I could almost see the scenery. Thanks for sharing. You did not go to San Giorgio Albano this trip?

Charlie, I can't wait to see your pics of Gargano and Vieste. A friend of mine in Celenza goes there on vacation and has described its beauty to me. BTW, interesting to hear about Foggia. When we visited Celenza (in the province of Foggia) someone told us that if we needed to shop, to avoid Foggia and go to Campobasso instead. They did not say why, but I guess it was the "gritty" aspect of it. I love your travel description too! The average tourists have no idea how wonderful the people down south are!
