Just read Episode Three, and saw the picture of Nina, wow! Funny how sometimes things like this are lying around for years and you never realize what you have.

This is really getting exiting!

And you thought you had skeletons in your closet! It seems we've all had some pretty "colorful" relatives, huh?

aint that the truth! I can't believe how much her naughty Nina reminds me of MY grandmother Antonina "Nina". Someday I'll write up a story on her. Multiple marriages, wife swapping, passing children off as one husband when the other was alive and well.

I know some people might be embarassed by a rather colorful relative, but I find it a lot of fun to uncover this stuff.

Smile

I'm with James.....
I don't find this stuff embarrasing at all. I find it exciting and intriguing, and can't believe the lengths to which our ancestors went to keep things private. It's like a dectective story unfolding..... what makes people think the way they do. I always try to understand if it was upbringing, or just a sign of the times.

At any rate.....Nina is a fascinating lady. Carole, when this is all finished maybe you should write your memoires. It is a truly compelling story.

Following 'information Embarassed received'... From whom - I shall refrain from saying, kiss I have decided to rename the Nughty Nina Saga!
From this time forward it shall be known as:

"a.k.a. NINA"
The 'Saga' Continues!

I thought I'd bump this to the top again as the interest in the 'Non-Italian Genealogy' has been re-kindled. Hope you don't mind... but this has now become a problem for me 'cos I don't know where else to look for the death records of all these people.

Quote::
"....So far I have not found any trace of the deaths of ANY of the Edmed family whatsoever - apart from that of Muriel Edith (Nina) in 1949!

So I am searching for ANY of the following deaths - if anyone has any ideas or can help...

1. Frederick William Edmed (1) b.1863
2. Mary Ellen Edmed (nee Stapleton) b.1886 Halifax Nova Scotia
3. Frederick William Edmed (2) b. 1889 Alexandria, Egypt
4. Katie Edmed (nee Savill) b. about 1882
5. Charles Newcombe b. about 1887 Camberwell London
6. Claude Victor Edmed b. 1895 Malta
7. Lily M...A. Tyson b. (Claude’s wife)
8. Richard Henry (or Henry Richard) Gunter b. about 1877 Wiltshire
9. Emily Rose Gunter* (Richard’s daughter) b. 1900 – Islington London

I find it incredible that there seem to be no easily found records of these people’s deaths. Their marriages – yes. One or two births too. But their deaths are another matter!

It's driving me up the wall.....

*It seems that Emily Rose Gunter became the 'partner' of Nina's brother Frederick and had two sons - both killed in WW2 - I have details of their deaths.

Well it's been a long and often difficult job trying to track down my maternal grandmother, aka Naughty Nina. But step by step, document by document the story is unfolding. I'm nowhere near the end of the journey yet, but anothe piece of this jigsaw began to fall in place 10 days ago.

I had found that my g grandfather served with the Royal Irish Rifles (London Btn) and had found what their uniform was like.

I was looking for a means of having his military service record. I knew that the National Archives would probably have a record of it, but who can find their way around their filing system - not me, that's for sure, and a search done by them is so very expensive. But I did find an ex soldier who does serches for military records. Long story short - his price was very good and he would supply me with all on a cd...

This morning I got this message (below) from him, and I'm so intrigued to know what this record contains for him to comment that it was unusual...

Dear Carole - ref your gt grandfather

A CD is in the post to you, - could you please let me know when it is received. Brief notes ref using the CD are below.

A service record has been found, and it is unusually detailed ("WO97" records normally consist of just four pages) - very unusually it includes a death certificate - Frederick died 24th Oct 1939.

Many thanks - regards - Tom

Oh and last night I found the WW1 medal record on the new Ancestry archives for Nina's two brothers who were both in the7th Royal Dragoon Guards...

So that's countless birds with one stone if all is as it seems! Can't wait... I'm soooo excited!

To Carole and "Gente..." researchers. My 6 years of 'navigation' in UK archives...

SERVICE RECORDS.
The Public Records Office publishes LEAFLETS which are of help to genealogists. Can be purchased by 50p, perhaps more p now. Excellent guides to collections.

Located at KEW, near Kew Gardens. Train- London to Taunton, then public transp. to PRO. The DOD records available to accredited researchers has data on all branches of service, including engagement with foreign armies.

Good general sources to have:

- Guide to the Contents of the Public Record Office. 2 v. Brief description of all classes of records.
- Public Record Office Handbook No.3: The Records of the Colonial and Dominion Offices...
- Specific Leaflets.
- British Library. Tripoli files.

Records of births, marriages and deaths are NOT in the PRO.
Post - 1837 are at the general Register Office., 10 Kingsway, London,
WC2B 6JP Certificates can be purchased at cost. The search room at St Catherine's House is open to the public. Very crowded!

I have done a lot of research in UK, including at Oxford ,Cambridge and at Private archives. Not easy to negotiate Somerset House, Portugal, and St. Catherine's House. Chancery Lane - good just for specific old data.

Search rooms are very crowded ... by... 3 guesses! It is like a battle to get the right register.

NON CONFORMIST REGISTERS. Held at PRO , contains mainly records of protestant congregations and few RC registers from the north of England.
Most of the registers in the PRO (REG 4 - RG8) available at Chancery Lane
are in the Mormon microfiche index of baptisms. Does not include Quaker Registers.
British Nationals abroad. Check Colonial ,or Foreign Service at KEW (CO, DO, FO)

More on this... if I can be of help!

Aether Wink

PRO Leaflets are a MUST to have.
