Does anyone here subscribe to, or know anything about this site? It really looks interesting and could be helpful if searching for a variety of information.

I'm thinking about joining to help with my continuing search for my elusive maternal family members... but it costs $96 a year! I certainly don't want to pay that if it's not a good site...

Luckily not Cathy, it was because it covered different countries that I felt it could be quite useful in light of the way 'Naughty Nina' (and her family) seemed to turn up all over the place! giornale

Interesting database... It seems like they have a handle on a lot of the smaller publications, whereas proquest (another digital newspaper archive) features the major papers like the NY Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, LA Times? and a few others

Proquest? Do you have a link Mauro? Carole, perhaps you can find someone to split the cost with you... like me? Wink

Hi Cathy,

Proquest has a bunch of databases, newspapers, journals, encyclopedia. They cater to universities and some high schools. Lots of the libraries in the Tri-state area offer the Proquest NY Times historical database to its members.

Their international collection might just prove to be misleading, this is what they have for The Uk.

Bristol Times And Mirror, The Bristol Gloucestershire 1897
Daily Universal Register, The London Middlesex 1786 - 1787
Edinburgh Advertiser, The Edinburgh Midlothian 1771 - 1909
Edinburgh Chronicle, The Edinburgh Midlothian 1759 - 1760
Edinburgh Courant Edinburgh Midlothian 1884
Edinburgh Evening Courant, The Edinburgh Midlothian 1867 - 1869
Edinburgh Weekly Journal Edinburgh Midlothian 1801 - 1808
Liverpool Courier, The Liverpool Lancashire 1897 - 1898
Liverpool Daily Post Liverpool Lancashire 1897
London Stars and Stripes London Middlesex 1942 - 1945

Italy...

Mediterranean Stars and Stripes Naples Naples 1943 - 1962

I wonder how long they have been around? I must look into this because it could be quite the resource (I'm always on the defensive with sites like these, so many are out to take advantage of people).

ok I am back... be careful

The list the Newport Mercury (a newspaper in Rhode Island) 1784-1874.

When you go to the page there are 15 images from 1784 and then 4 images from 1822, 8 from 1866 and then it skips to 1882 where they have a run to 1928, then it skips right to 1974 and ends.

Completely misleading... please be careful

That's why I asked James.... It did seem a 'bit' far fetched even to a 'Dork' like me!

I was dabbling on the internet after reading these posts and found this link through the NYPL web page which may be useful regarding historical newspapers:

You are sooo not a dork! kiss

If I can protect one person from being taken, I will be happy. As I said there are way too many "organizations" creating historical and genealogical websites, and through clever slogans, and creative web design sucker people into ridiculous subscription rates.

Old saying my mum always said to me as a 'Thank You'

"I'll love ya all yer life and ten days after!"

(meaning 'I'm in your debt forever....')
