Just so everyone is up to date, the Archivio di Stato in Frosinone destroyed their Lista di Leva for lack of space!! They only have foglio matricolare from 1888 (Not sure of exact year but late 1880's) That is the year they enlisted not the birth year.
Many comune's in the Province still have their copy of the Lista di Leva even as far back as 1809-(Sora)
OMG! That is terrible! Have these people heard of scanners and portable hard drives?!!

Thanks Riccardo!

I'm going to try to scan some things over the weekend, so I will post it here when I have it. I basically just sent a request to the state archives to see if they had any information on my great grandfather (and his parents) and they photocopied a bunch of things for me, one of which was this esito di leva. I had never heard of him serving in the military, but then again, there are a lot of things I don't know about him!

ricbru wrote:
Hello, yes Esito di leva is the same of lista di leva.
Archivio di Stato di Ragusa shoud have the military record of your ancestor.
I think that if it was not send it to you, maybe you didn't request it, or there is not because he never did the military service, or because the record is lost.
Maybe if you can scan the document, we can read what is written on it.
I hope it helps
bye Riccardo

Hi Everyone,

I was quite surprised today to find a packet from Italy with some new information about my family. (I sent an email to them back in April and didn't hear anything, so this was quite a nice treat).

Anyway, they included a document called the "esito di leva" for my Great Grandfather. I think this is the same thing as the lista di leva, no?

I could read all of the information about his physical attributes and family, but there is a section next to the physical attributes that I could not understand.

With this information would there be any way to tell if my ancestor served or has a foglio matricolare? Who would I need to contact?

Just fyi, this document came from the Archivo di Stato - Ministero per i Beni e le Attivita Culturali in Ragusa.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi All, New to the forum and just got back from 3 mths in Italy (Ascoli Piceno)

I was in the position to get into the Archivio Di Stato in AP and managed to get records easily for my wife's grandfather, and his brother. I didn't realise at the time but their father also fought in the Italo-Turk war and could have got one for him. Luckily a lovely lady working their gave me her email and told me to get in touch if I needed anything!

I have also done the rounds of the local communes in AP and got a lot of data, but have got back to the point around 1850 pre the unification and have to chase the local parishes. I will check out for posts on this to find some ideas.

It's great to have a place to guide you on this sort of thing, especially when you don't speak Italian!

B

Hi Ben
Welcome to Gente. I'm sure you will get lots of help from the members here. Whatever you do DONT EVER lose that email connection you were given, it could be the key to opening many doors for you in the future.

I must add-- you'll be making us all jealous-- 3 months in Italy WOW!!!!

I never got around to posting my GGF's esito di leva, so here it is! I can read most of the personal information, but I'm not sure what the second column on the second page references. Can anyone help me figure this part out? Thanks!

The second column in the second page states that Salvatore Barone was 1,48 mt (58,3 inches) high, he had blond sleek hair, chestnut eyes, pale complexion, healthy teeth and his thorax circumference was 0,76 mt (30 inches). The 4th column states that on Nov 24 1916 he was rejected because of his thorax was too small.

Livio, my ggf was also rejected for being too small! LOL. I think he was about 60 inches tall.

Livio, thank you for the translation! I never would have figured that one out! Do you (or anyone) know whether the individual would have been present when this determination was made? My grandfather immigrated for the last time (as far as I know) in 1910, so I don't imagine he would have been in the country when he was rejected. Hard to believe I am actually taller than my GGF.... only about 2 inches taller, though!
