I'm trying to trace a family for a friend: The name is James Caird. Wife's maiden name Elizabeth Skinner.
He may have been in France in 1851, this is when his son David was born:

Son.
Name: David Rattary Caird
Born:19 June 1851
Place: St Germain DE Levie, France

Dont know if Census forms are available for France or what type of records I'd need to look up, grateful for any ideas
Emmy

Emmy could you possibly supply a province for the town in France? I find the following villages with the prefix "Saint-Germain" perhaps "Levie" should be "Levis"

There is a Levie in Corsica...

Here is a list:

www.fallingrain.com/wo.../a/i/n/45/

Thanks

I also see a reference to "St. German, France" on the 1871 Census, Dunkirk, France on the 1881 Scotland Census
and a "Brest, France" on the 1891
for him. I wonder....

I suppose you might have already seen his marriage 7 Feb 1870 at Dundee, Angus, Scotland to Matilda Bamborrow?

James,

There is a Saint Germain En Laye (Paris) and Saint Germain De Pres (Paris)
Both are arrondissements of Paris. I believe some others exist, needs checking. For Paris check the local archives, census, and churches.

It is possible that nationals from UK had they own -Anglican Church and Cemetery- as they do in Rome. Those would be good sources.

James and Emmy,

Yes, just checked there are several churches. Go Google: Paris. Anglican Churches. Also under Church of England, in other areas.

Saint Germain En Laye Hippiche. A favorite with riders from all over Europe.
Old Duchess of W. had a house there, and other expats, famous or not!
Just trivia!

Thank You Sophia and James for helping me with this problem.
I've never had to do research in France before. Confused

James After I checked the link you posted only two seemed a possibility
S.G.-le-Lievre - Alsace
or
S.G.-de-Livet - Basse-Normandie
I was back in touch with my friend tonight and she remembered someone mentioning Normandie.

It seems that the family were weavers and they went out to France either to learn more about Jaquard weaving or to teach it.
She was trying to find David Rattray Caird's birth certificate and if he had any brothers or sisters born in France.
She is also trying to discover if David's father, James Caird(born 2 Nov. 1808)died in France.
His mother ,Elizabeth Skinner died in Scotland 1 Feb 1857
Thank you James I did know that he married Matilda Bamborough in Dundee in 1870. It seems they had 10 children.

Thank you both so much for your help
Emmy

James and Emmy:
Public Records Office. Emigrants. Documents.
PRO Leaflets n.7. "Includes references in PRO Documents to individuals and families emigrating to various colonies and places in different parts of the world." Easy to access information.

Also, found some old notes on churches in Paris:

English Speaking Catholic Church of Saint Joseph.
British Embassy Church- Protestant.
Anglican Church.
Methodist Church.
Church of Scotland.
And also the American churches: The American Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, and The American Church in Paris.

Do not have addresses, but for sure on phone books.
