My friends from Paduli are visiting in two weeks and I would like to get them a small gift. I have a man and a woman in their mid to late 30s and two boys 3 and 6 years old. I was thinking of getting the man and boys baseball hats with Yale's logo (since I am in Connecticut and that would be a local gift). Any other ideas? What can I get for the woman? I am not sure what kind of American gift would be desirable. Also, everything in the USA is made in China, LOL! When I visited, they gave me several books on Paduli as gifts.

I think you should reciprocate with the same gift they gave you. Why not get them some books about your very own (conn.) local history?

Watta ya mean Yale hats..whats wrong with the Yankees!!! I think everybody knows "them"!! lol

We had a relative that visited us from Milan, years ago. We had the same problem..everything we found, wasnt made here. I cant even recall what we ended up getting. Oh wait..I know..we gave them silverplated serving untensils. I believe those were made here. It sorta matched what they gave us..something for the home.

My husband is a season ticket holder for the Red Sox. I think Yankee hats would be grounds for divorce! LOL. I was thinking of Mauro's idea of a book but in fairness, it would have to be heavy on pictures, because only the man can read English. Sure, our books were all in Italian, but I was so delighted to have something from my grandmother's town, that did not matter.

Good one Eleven! How about jewelry for the woman? You can never go wrong with jewelry. Maybe a sterling silver chain with some sort of U.S. charm on it? Or a really nice photo frame. During their visit you can take a picture of all of you together and put it in the frame.

My aunt loved that when I did it for her..

I don't think you're odd at all! Some people don't like that sort of thing..others love it. I personally hate massages..I prefer to sit in my jaccuzzi. But I do love a good facial and pedicure. I'm on my feet most of the day and it really helps my feet, legs and back.

Regardless, Italian people, especially woman, like nice things..quality things. Its not going to be easy until you know a bit about the type of person she is. Have a look at things like the colors she likes to wear..is she a serious person or more carefree..is appearance important to her or is she more down to earth..that type of thing. Do you know if she has any special interests..maybe sewing or knitting..you know, that kind of thing. This might give you clues as to what to do for her.

I have seen books about my grandfather's comune on the internet but they only take euros. I wish I could buy one. Books they cannot get there would be nice. How about a nice picture book of your region of the country?

Well, my friends are visiting this weekend, so here is what I did:
for the men: hats from University of Connecticut and maple sugar candy
for the children: bears dressed as minutemen, Pez, and a Crayola set
for the woman: a small vase made by a Sioux native American and maple sugar candy (and yes, I was at the casino last night to purchase it, LOL)
