It was in fact an April fool's joke prepared by the BBC and like the last one they did, it managed to get quite a few people to believe it. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is know as "Auntie Beeb in Britain because it is always so staid in it's views on anything. But just once in a while they resort to something like this.
The last time was in 1957 when TV was just becoming popular and they issued an item on a
very serious current affairs programme called Panorama (which is still running now). The commentator for the item was Richard Dimbleby a pretty serious commentator at the BBC. He actually did the commentary on Churchills funeral... The item was so good and the public were really NOT au fait with the subject matter in those days that many were fooled for some time. Here's that spoof!
