Here's a recipe that was posted by a friend on another forum. I've always wondered what these were - but they sound 'divine' so I will definately be trying them (but I'll have to substitute a thin batter for the cream or buttermilk one)....

Fried Green Tomatoes
Depending on how many you want to feed but this recipe will be for 2 so I use on nice size firm green tomato, do not get one that is soft or has even a hint of red on it.

You will need the following ingredients:

Flour - enough to dredge the tomatoes through it cover nicely
Crushed Red Pepper flakes - amount is to your liking - spicy hot, medium, etc.
Italian Herb Seasoning - Again to your liking I don't do a lot I do just enough for someone to say hmmm does this have basil, etc.
Cayenne Pepper - sprinkled on top when cooking
Heavy whipping cream or buttermilk
Olive Oil
Salt & Pepper
goat cheese (optional)
Tabasco (optional)

In a skillet add olive oil, I usually use probably about 1/2 cup all together, I don't like "fried" I use it enough to nicely brown both sides. Heat your oil.

Cut tomatoes about 1/4 inch you should get 4/5 slices out of one tomato

Mix your flour with all your seasonings above.

Pour cream/buttermilk in a bowl - put slice of tomato in cream/buttermilk then dredge both sides through flour-spice mixture. Put onto skillet that has nice hot olive oil should be on medium heat, you don't want them to cook quickly but you don't want them to sit there too long they will get mushy.

Sprinkle cayenne pepper lightly over tomatoes in skillet. I also add a touch more salt and pepper. It really brings out the flavor.

Brown on both sides I would say approximately anywhere from 8-10 mins on both sides. Put on plate when done and cut goat cheese place a slice of goat cheese on each tomato. It sort of melts a little on the way to the table. You can put a little tabasco on once at the table if you want, depending on your spice taste. Sometimes I use it, sometimes I don't. I like it both ways.

These Green Tomatoes are absolutely great topped off with a lowfat sour cream. I use dip mine into flour then beaten egg then into Italian seasoned bread crumbs and fry. (I sometimes mix in some grated parmesan cheese in the bread crumbs) I can sit a platter of these out and they are gone in a flash.

I'll give the new recipie a try. Bet it's great Carol. Will let you know.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Can't wait to hear how it turns out lilbees.... I'll try your coating of flour and beaten egg too as I can't have cream etc.

Shouldn't really have fried stuff either - but hey, just once in a while Embarassed right?

Went to the store and have some green tomatoes to cook. Since I live in Georgia we have lots of produce available year round. It's great. By the way, if you spray a cookie sheet and place your tomatoes on it and bake in the oven @400 for about 10-15 minutes turning once you can enjoy any of these without frying. I do zuchinni, broccoli and cauliflower in the oven. Asparagus is great! Of course, I only coat the zuchinni and tomatoes. The others are left plain and only tossed with some olive oil.
