I am trying to locate the Catholic Parish where some family membes lived in Chicago.

They lived at 309 Elm Street in 1910. If I can locate the right one maybe I can get lucky and find some birth/marriage records not recorded with Cook County.

Thank you Steven.

I just needed the Catholic Churches that were open in 1910-1913. I will call the Archdiocese of Chicago to see if they can give me a more specific church within walking distance of the address I posted. The family had 9 very young children at the time.

If the Church and or Churches are closed that they may have attended then I would have to make a request for documents from the Archdiocese Archives rather than directly to the Church.

But, again, thank you for the information.

Steven, the article was quite informative. Our family was in or near California, Sacramento, and Taylor Street. Going to visit on a Sunday you knew you were near when you could begin to sense the wonderful smells of food cooking. It's like driving down Cicero today. The smells of good Italian food waft in the air.

Thanks,
lilbees

I think the food is the big attraction at most festivals. At least for me anyway.

Being half Italian and half Greek/Albania the Greek Festival is one of my favorites. My Greek/Albanian grandfather was a great cook and would cater to me and my likes. Thank goodness he lived nearby.

To get great Italian food, as I said earlier, we had to drive into Chicago. Sundays were always great. My great aunt was a fabulous cook. Having been born in Tunisia there were a lot of things she made that were too hot for me to eat but she never forgot her Italian roots and wonderful dishes.

Have fun at those festivals. Georgia seems to be a wasteland of good ethnic cooking other than great southern cooking. You talk about getting fat, just try out that food. Lots of fat is the right word to describe the cooking but it tastes soooooooooooo good.

Just an update with my Church location. Haven't accomplished that as yet but, I have located the baptismal records for my father and his siblings. The Archdioceses is working on the addresses I gave them when my dad, aunt and uncle were born. They are checking the registers of the closed churches first then to the still active churches for a possible location of the Parish/es.

My contacts with the Archdiocese Records Department have been great. I didn't realized how helpful they would be. The best part is I didn't have to fill out a bunch of forms as told on the website but could include all the requests in a letter to them. I have requested the genealogical copies rather than just the standard record.

If they lived in the Taylor Street area they would have gone to Our Lady Of Pompeii on Lexington a block off Taylor St. The LDS has baptism indexes for there or you can call. They will not give you copies of original records but they will make an extraction.

Hey thanks Cathy. For the 3 addresses I was looking for Our Lady of Pompeii was one of them. The others are Holy Guardian Angel and Servita Church of St. Phillip Benizi. I did check the LDS catalog and found they did have some films. When my library is open on Tuesday I will talk with them about these.

lilbees

(when you said "They will not give you copies" were you referring to the LDS or the Church???)

The church will not give you original documents or copies of originals. My father and my aunt needed a record of their baptism and the had a form they completed for them to furnish the pertinent data. I beleive all the LDS has for Our Lady of Pompeii is indexes of baptisms.
