Both family information and my research have established that my Gt Grandparents both came from the Village Scala just north of Milan
Rafaele Staiano b about 1873 and Maria Custoda Oliva b about 1879 ran away and married in Naples and emigrated to England.
The 1901 English census has them living in London with Rafaele's brother Frank.
Can anyone help me to trace my family back further.

Have you tried writing away for Rafaele and Maria's birth Acts from Scala or for their Marriage Act? This will allow you to go one (possibly two generations) back.
I don't know if the LDS microfilmed the records from around that area. Hopefully one of our members can fill us in on an address to write to.

Thanks for the tip. I did try the LDS IGI for them but the fact that the choice of Continental Europe did not give the option of Italy suggests that they have no Italian records.
Am I missing something here, have the LDS been active and the tools I have are not finding the records.

Hi,
I might be wrong but I cannot find any place called Scala North of Milan. Is it a hamlet? Of which town? Is it Scala the full name of the village or just part of it?

I was told of the town by my Grandmother not long before she died. 18 months ago I found it on Google maps around 20 miles NE of Milan. It was just a hamlet. I did show it to all of my family so I am not dreaming.
Now I cannot find it on Goggle maps any longer. The usual upgrade no doubt.

You have got me thinking and doing some more searching and Encyclopeadia Brittanica maps show just one Scala in the Naples area.
My grandmother was in her 80's when she told me this, but she was born in the UK and never went there. I remember being surprised when she said Scala near Milan because La Scala in Milan springs to mind. Could it be that she was told Scala and associated it with Milan.
I guess I have to consider that they could have come from Scala nr Naples which would fit more easily with them marrying in Naples.

Thanks it rather confirms my last post. I must confess that the Scala I found north of Milan on Google, did strike me as very small, just a few houses. My great grandfather died on route to Scala to put a memorial to his wife in the church. The one I saw on Google was too small for a church.
Should I repost this to the Southern Italy section with an amended title?
