I am in need of some help finding a death date. I need the date of death for Maria Concetta (Garrafa) Napolitano. She died in Illinois and I beleive she died in 1970 or 1971. She was born in 1885 and died in Westchester (Cook County), Illinois or somewhere near Chicago. I know she lived in Westchester when she died. I checked the social security database on the LDS site and did not find it. Can someone check Ancestry? We called her Concetta so it may be under that name or Maria or Mary. Confused
Thanks.

Cathy,
Just to let you know I've been checking Ancestry but thus far have come up blank.

I think the reason we cannot find anything is I doubt Concetta had a social security number. She had no reason to have one and back then I don't think it was required. My mom has a stack of mass cards from funerals they went to but Concetta's is not there. Shocked I'm guessing if hers is not there it was Nov-February when Concetta died (we would have been in Florida then). I'll check out the Chicago Tribune archives. I will have to pay for access to the obit if they have it but I have no problem with that.
Thanks Biff.

OK, we cannot find anything on Concetta. How about the cousin who escorted her to the US? Pietro Folino. Here is the ship manifest:

Are their any census records for him? Or is this my Grandfather under an alias?!! Shocked

That goes for me too Cathy - I looked quite a lot today but same as Biff - no luck! I did find a lot of Maria Concetta Napolitano's though. Really need more info though to get a good clear search on Ancestry...

If you get the chance - give me a 'Skype' if you're free later.... I'll be up 'til about 12.30am MY time (7 hours ahead of Chicago).

Sorry Carole - I had 2 doctor appointments today so I got home late. The Chicago Tribune archives are no help. You have to pay for each file viewed but they do not give a first name. Shocked There are 129 pages of Napolitano obits! When I tried to narrow the search by first name nothing came up. I give up for now. Someone in my family should know. I'll ask around.

Oh, and I was quite serious about the young man who escorted Maria Concetta Garrafa and her 2 young children to the US. This Pietro Folino may actually be my grandfather using someone else's name. I cannot find a Pietro Folino that matches this age (I could have missed him or he could have lied about his age). This age, however does match my grandfather's in 1912. After the last search for my grandfather's manifest (which I had been searching for over 10 years) I told my dad it must no longer exist. He told me his dad may have used someone else's name. I know my grandfather was still in Italy in April, 1912 because he passed his Italian army physical. So if anyone can find this Pietro Folino (actually a cousins name) in a 1920 census it would prove that this is not my grandfather. Until then I have to wonder.

Someone found it!! Get this...they dropped the o! They were under Napolitan not Napolitano. Go figure! Her death record is still a mystery. But this is a revalation to me and a big help if I want to find their son's children. Also found a Pete Folino census record from 1930. It listed his entrance to the US as 1912 - the correct year. So, Pietro did accompany Maria Concetta. In 1930, no wife, no kids.
Thanks to everyone for their help. kiss

That's really great news Cathy.

So - yet another little piece to another family jigsaw puzzle.

Wow! Thanks! But that is not her. She never lived in Melrose Park and died in the 70's. Thanks so much for trying though. Very Happy

Cathy, Cook County has been pretty good to me in responding to my requests. A little slow at times (sometimes months) but they do answer. I found it is much faster to request a certified copy rather than a genealogical copy. The request for genealogical copies are set aside to complete the other certified requests. The cost is also less money for the same thing. The response time is much quicker. Just fill out the online form with the information you have and send it in.

lilbees

PS: they give you the same info for either request. Copies from microfilm.
