I get a lot of emails from my Montalto Uffugo website from various people who live in or came from Montalto Uffugo. By far the most emails I receive are from people with the surname Zingone which was changed to Zingoni in South America to those who emmigrated there. I recently received an email from Italy from a descendant of a Filippo Zingone which basically said that Filippo went out for a cigarette one day and never returned home, leaving his wife and children behind. The family later received letters from him from America. They have asked for my help in finding what happened to him. I am having difficulty and want to help them so I must ask for some help. I should not here that his son Giuseppe came to America in search of his father when he was old enough, and when he returned to Montalto Uffugo but never spoke of his trip. The family assumes he began a new family in the United States.
Here is his information:
Filippo Zingone born in 1856 in Montalto Uffugo
FILIPPO ANTONIO ZINGONE BIRTH ACT
Left Montalto Uffugo sometime prior to 1902 because his son Giuseppe came then on The Archimede but Ellis Island linked the wrong manifest so I cannot provide a copy. He is listed there under the mis-spelled surname of Vingone.
Any help of finding any traces of Filippo Antonio Zingone would be appreciated. This family has waited 100 years to know what became of him.

Cathy,
The 1902 manifest for the Archimede shows Giuseppe and a friend last name Cincola did not sail. Also located another manifest for the Lombardia earlier in April with Giuseppe and friend lined out. Interestingly, the Lombardia manifest showed the destination as Pittsburgh but the Archimede manifest showed New York as the destination.

Do you have any clues as to where Filippo may have settled? Return address from America on letters? Postmark on envelopes?

Biff

Unfortunately, I do not. I will see if I can email her and ask but I need to get it translated to Italian first. I really don't think she will know though.

Cathy,

I don't know if you are already aware of this, but if you know the correct ship you may be able to find the correct manifest using the "Steven Morse" website. Apparently a lot of electronic records are not always linked correctly to the scanned images. It is a tedious task, but you can review all the manifests via this site........

www.jewishgen.org/data...sgold.html

You can also search by name or town ----- I was able to find a lot of records this way since many names were misspelled too....my Maternal GF Rosario Minisci was listed as Minisci Rosano (having Rosano as his last name which is what came up on a search)....You still need an account at Ellis Island, but this is a very powerful search tool that utilizes the same database

Thanks Charlie! Actually, I did use Steve Morse's site a while back to capture all the immigrants out of my Grandfather's town. It can be accessed at the bottom of this webpage: www.cosenzaexchange.co...tions.html
